Global Professionals, a Strategic Project for Creating Globally Competent Professionals

Minutes of the 2nd course of the GP lecture

Part1 【 Social and Emotional Competence 】

Speaker: Manabu Yamamoto President of Yamamoto International Marketing Institute

Introduction
● Every month, you should live a meaningful life, so that you can say, “ I did my best! ”
↳You should have some experiences in which you feel accomplished as many as seven
or eight months through a year.
↳You will fail to meet performance targets if you make a half-hearted effort toward your work.
=You can never be a professional.

● You should create a “ breakthrough” in your life at GP.
Ultimately, it is “ Social and Emotional Competence” that makes you an authentic professional.

Main Theme 【 What is Social and Emotional Competence? 】

● You live in the era where you see accelerating social and economic changes: you can’t expect
any pay-raise unless you make strenuous efforts with social and emotional competence.
● How to develop your social and emotional competence?
↳ 【 Develop your strength. 】【 Meet diverse people. 】【 Expand your vocabulary. 】
【 Educate yourself. 】【 Know your mission. 】
● Seeing is believing. Action is required.
● Improve your sense of time.
↳ Do you know how fast you are per hour? Only you can feel the speed.
↳ There are two types of people to grasp and understand the concepts of the things.
A: A person who makes an instant understanding with a good listening skill.
B: A person who eventually knows what’s going on while actually doing it.
To transform B into A, all you have to do is to train yourself.

Tips:
◎ It is important for you to find your best way to work in everything. Develop your skill.
◎ To leave a good impression on others, practicing is required.
◎ Monotonous practice doesn’t produce anything.
Without focusing on what you are doing, you will never improve yourself.

Q.: Share your idea about “social and emotional competence”.
What is the definition of “ social and emotional competence”?
Or how do you define a person with good social and emotional competence?

Some of Students’ answers:
1.I’ve found a role model near me. First of all, know your DNA ( father and mother ).
Father and Mother is your role model. Keep that in mind as your priority and act
  accordingly.

2.You can’t improve your social and emotional competence in a day.
Your daily habits make you. In addition, a pay-it-forward attitude makes you more socially
  and emotionally competent.

3.Taking a subjective view of social and emotional competence, it means “Driving Force and
Passion Challenges.” From an objective perspective, it depends on “whether you can be
a good role model for others, or whether you are attractive enough.”

4.A person, who continues their self-development and is respectful, seems to be socially and
  emotionally competent.

5.Passion・Action・Chance Meeting: these are the factors in becoming social and emotional
  competent.

Final comments on this topic from Mr.Yamamoto:
What is social and emotional competence? I’d like you to talk about not example cases but
your idea. Wherever you are, when asked, you need to read the atmosphere and immediately
give your proper response.

PartⅡ【 To Live on Mission – Servant Leader 】

Speaker: Dr. Shinichi Takamoto CEO of Mitsui Memorial Hospital

Introduction: Footprints of my life, Influential figures in my life

● In Childhood
-Born in Takarazuka, raised in Shikoku
-An Aiko Gakuen Alumnus
-Raised by father, an architect and mother, always believing in me.

● Three people I was influenced in my high school days:
1) Albert Schweitzer
-“ I am Life that wills to live in the Midst of Life that wills to live.”
-This is really true, and I was so deeply touched with these words that they are still in my heart
whenever I think of the reason to live.

2) Noboru Iwamura
-“ To live together.” 「Tomoni Ikiru.」I was impressed with these words.
-The encounter with these words was one of the triggers to become a doctor. I was thinking of
becoming a remote area doctor or an overseas doctor.

3) Martin Buber
-You can live a human life only after you build warm relationships with others.
-Only in encounter, human existence is proven.
In a concrete encounter, you can find your humaneness.

● Medical School the University of Tokyo
-Seeking for a living together life, I joined a boat club.
-What I’ve received from the experience:
1) I made friends whom I have a heart-to-heart talk with
2) Meeting many different kinds of people enabled me to develop my social skills.

● My doctorhood :
-I found cardiac surgery very interesting, and decided to become a cardiac surgeon.
-When I was around 40 years old, working with confidence, I gave my honest opinion to my
superior, which caused me to be transferred from Saitama Medical University to Showa General
 Hospital.
-There was no cardiac surgery in Showa General Hospital in those days. While I was depressed,
I was able to spend a lot of time with my patients. This time with my patients help me find the
 guiding principles for life.
→This experience led me to the mission: Patient-oriented Clinic and Research

【 Main Theme 】‟Live Forward Together”

● Medicine has rapidly advanced.
→Consequently, the illusion of medicine has also emerged in layman.

● Illusion of Medicine
↳ Man can live forever. / All disease could be conquered in future. / Advancement of medicine
could lead to create a life.
→Humans are, however, a tiny blip in the existence of the universe.

● Limitations of Human Beings
↳ Big Universe—It’s said to be 13.7 billion light year far.
Small Universe, our human body—Medicine could know only a small parts.
(Surgeons just replace diseased tissue or repair malfunctioned parts, and a vital power of
patients’ life cures disease. The way of caring patients are known by experience of healing
steps. Precise mechanism of disease and healing is only partly understood.)
・↳ Mamoru Mouri, the first Japanese Astronaut in the Space Shuttle “Endeavor”, said,
“ Human beings are kept alive by nature.” As he said, the universe is huge, and we are so tiny.

● What can we do in Medicine?
↳ Doctors could play only as a guide for patients. A vital power of patients’ life cures disease.

● Doctors as a Guide
↳ Doctors should climb a mountain with patients carrying heavy bags on the back.
↳ Climbing a high mountain together, both will get satisfaction and can gain their trust.

● Live Forward Together
↳ Living forward together with differences in opinions and beliefs sometimes lead to conflict.
↳ The joy of overcoming many difficulties together brings you both joy. This is called encounter.

● Concept of “ Live Forward Together ”
↳ I often say to doctors, nurses, and patients, the things as below;
Doctor : Never think a doctor himself can cure a disease. A patient himself helps a doctor to
         successfully undergo their surgery.
Nurse : You may have a lot of supplementary work, but don’t accept everything that doctors say.
Instead, trust your own judgement, and act accordingly.
Patient: Your treatment, you are responsible for your life, and outcome of the care.
↳ Good team-work between patients and professionals is required, and doctors should be
a servant leader in the team.

● To Live
↳ The Chinese letter 「生」originally meant that the plant is growing.
↳ In Japanese, 「生」has a wider meaning than English. It doesn’t mean to have a daily physical
life, but to have a life mentally, spiritually, and emotionally.

● Mission Of Mitsui Memorial Hospital
Old ) At Mitsui Hospital, we devote ourselves to the betterment of society as a whole by offering
      current and best medical services.
New) At Mitsui Hospital, we devote ourselves to the betterment of society as a whole by offering
medical services in a spirit of respect, comradeship and care. This approach springs from the
fact that we respect and value the lives of our patients above all else.
      We changed as above.
↳ The former lacks patients’ perspectives.

● For Better Teamwork
↳ Implementing servant leadership fosters good teamwork.
↳ There are two elements of servant leadership.
1)Strategic Thinking
2)Emotional Intelligence
Unless you are competent in anything, it is difficult to become a leader, but at the same time,
a person with impressive ability doesn’t always become a leader.
↳Having emotional intelligence is the key to become a leader.

● Importance of Mission
↳ The purpose of the action: you should always keep this mission in mind.
Otherwise, you tend to act from self interest, are as changeable as a weathercock,
   and you lose credibility.
↳ Always remind yourself why what you’re doing matters.
↳ Especially in difficult times, you need a mission statement.

● Embrace Failure. Accept Failure.
↳ While carrying out the mission, things sometimes just don’t go right.
But always remember that everyone fails.
When you do your best and still fail, you can learn a lot of things.
↳ Additionally, it is necessary to forgive others for their past failures.

● A Great Leader
↳ A great leader learns from their mistakes.
↳ Like a phoenix which obtains new life by arising from the ashes of its predecessor, a great
Leader becomes stronger and more confident every time they overcome a calamity.

● To Spark a Social Movement
↳ Establish a Mission and Act with Passion, You Can Change the World.

Qs and As:

Q: At hospital, what do you do in order to let those who work in shifts, know the mission?
A:
・I use every opportunity to remind and keep them informed of the mission; to tell them
at an entrance ceremony, to write on the web, and to talk every time I have a chance.
・Whenever problems arise, we are able to review decision making agreements, where decision
making is guided by the mission statement.

Q: What motivated you to change the mission statement?
A:
We can develop an effective action plan by the surrounding circumstances. However, mission is
philosophy. Therefore, we should not change the mission frequently.
When there are more appropriate words for finding a reason to live, it’s good to use them.
On the other hand, when the mission statement is fully accepted by everyone’s heart, there is no
need to change.

Q: Could you tell us your story about the setback which you had in your 40s if you have?
A:
Truly, I’d thought of getting out of the academic medical center. However, when I got actually
transferred, I was depressed. I found myself a very weak person. Nonetheless I found out that
what matters is not a position title or a track record, but doing the best performance in a given
environment.

Final comments from Mr. Yamamoto:
● Practice asking questions.
-So many people don’t know how to ask questions. When you’d like to ask questions, you need to
make sure what you really want to ask about.
-Practice delivering your questions in front of the mirror.
By practicing, you can improve your inquiry skills.
-Communication skills, this is something that only you can fix.
● Study efficiently in advance.
-To instantaneously catch up in the business world, study carefully in advance and gain your
knowledge.
-Then with the knowledge gathered from your learning, develop your wisdom.
